Artists Bio
Douglas Vanasselstine (b.1965, Canada)
Vanasselstine learned early that he could make more sales working live rater than hanging his art in galleries, and began performing his craft 9-5 daily out various retail venues and events. The son of two artists Douglas’ training began at the age of 5. By the age of 16 Vanasselstine had mastered most of the traditional art forms with ease and ventured out to begin painting and sketching portraits live at Kingston City Hall Marketplace. From there he opened his own gallery at the age of 21. Really working as a commissioned artist Vanasselstines art was commercial through and through for the first 11 years of his career. In 1992 Vanasselstine began Airbrushing freehand and never looked back. He is the only freehand airbrush artist known that doesn’t trace, project or stencil his art, yet achieving a high end value of realism according to the editor of Airbrush Action Magazine. Vanasselstine often paints his subjects live by sitting using this technique. Vanasselstine is self admittedly addicted to airbrushing live in front of crowds of onlookers, and sees the process as a dance.
